Talks on council house changes
TENANTS are being consulted on new ways of managing the High Peak’s council houses.
High Peak Borough Council is proposing to take over management of the area’s 4,100 authority-owned homes.
Since 2004, repairs, lettings and rent collections have been run by High Peak Community Housing (HPCH).
The changes would mean an extra £178,000 being spent on council houses from April 2013 because the money would not be needed to maintain HPCH.
Councillor Anthony McKeown, executive member for community services, said the plans were the “best way forward for tenants”.
He added: “By returning housing management to the council, efficiency savings can be put straight into managing and maintaining the houses.
“But we want to hear tenants’ views on this proposal and give them the opportunity to shape the service.”
There would be no change to tenancy agreements and the borough council is pledging to keep rent levels as low as possible while maintaining tenants’ homes.
Tenants can discuss the possible changes with council staff at a series of drop-in events.
The first takes place at Bradbury House, Glossop, on January 21, followed by St Nicholas’ Hall, Fairfield, on January 22, Chapel-en-le-Frith Town Hall on January 23, Gamesley Residents’ Association on January 24, Bamford Memorial Hall on January 28, Hadfield Community Centre on January 29, Buxton Library on January 30 and New Mills Town Hall on January 31.
All drop in sessions start at 4pm.
