The following events will be held in the Derbyshire Dales to commemorate the start of World War One –

The Matlock sub branch of the Royal British Legion and Matlock Town Council will hold a candle–lit vigil on August 4 at Park Head, Crown Square, Matlock, between 10pm and 11pm. Each serviceman who died in the war will be individually remembered.

On August 4 organ grinder Patrick Cooke will perform music from the era at Crich Stand at 10am.

Derbyshire Records Office, in Matlock, is hosting a free exhibition on the summer of 1914 until September 27. It will also host Voices from the Front on August 7 from 2pm, which can be booked by calling 01629 538347.

The Bakewell branch of the Royal British Legion will hold a remembrance service at Bath Gardens, Bakewell, on August 4 at 11am.

The garden is decorated 71 crosses for each of the men who were killed in the war.

All Saints Parish Church, Bakewell, will host a service at 10pm on August 4, followed by a long silence.

There will be a service at St Mary’s Church, Crich, on August 3 at 6.30pm to mark “The lights going out over Europe”.

Four soldiers from The Mercian Regiment will be laying a wreath at the War Memorial in Hall Leys Park, Matlock. A commemoration service will commence at 11am and the public are asked to arrive at 10.30am.

The Methodist churches in Darley Dale will be open on August 4 for quiet prayer and reflection during the following times -

Darley Hillside Church, Moor Lane, 10am to noon

Hackney Church, Greenaway Lane, 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm

Dale Road Church 8pm to 11pm
