Theft alert to horse owners
HORSE-LOVERS are being warned to take extra care of their animals and property, after a spate of crimes throughout Derbyshire.
An Ifor Williams horse trailer was taken from Calver on Monday October 12, and there have since been similar thefts in the High Peak, Derbyshire Dales, Chesterfield and South Derbyshire. Bridles and tack have also been taken from a stables in Kilburn.
Inspector Erika Green, who helps run Derbyshire Constabulary's Horsewatch scheme, said: "Horse rugs can be painted with waterproof paint, with either a postcode or other identifiable mark.
"This will not only identify them so they can be returned to the owner if found but also discourages the theft as thieves are less likely to be able to sell them on.
"Wherever possible do not leave tack in sheds in remote areas.
"Also horse trailers and horse boxes could have lettering put on the roofs so they are easily identifiable from the air," she added.
Anyone with information about the thefts should call 0345 123 3333.
