Organisers have hailed this year’s Bakewell Show which defied the summer washout to wow scores of overjoyed revellers.

More than 65,000 spectators flocked to the popular Peak District event over the past two days to enjoy a mix of rural attractions and family-themed delights.

Show manager Janet Bailey said: “It’s been an absolutely fantastic two days – I’m extremely happy and I hope everyone feels the same.

“Roll on next year!”

Many agricultural events – including the Great Yorkshire Show – have been called off as a result of the wet summer.

But Mrs Bailey said this year’s Bakewell Show was never going to be cancelled.

She added: “Six weeks ago we were stood in water on the show ground and we were starting to get a bit worried.

“But the last time Bakewell Show had to be called off was during World War Two and unless World War Three broke out we would never cancel.”

This year’s fun-filled extravaganza boasted an array of attractions including horticultural exhibits, dog shows and livestock contests as well as daredevil motorcyclists and a dancing robot.

Angela Stevens travelled all the way from Austrlia to be part of the much-loved spectacular, now in its 182nd year.

The 36-year-old said: “I’ve had an absolutely wonderful time.

“I’ve loved the feeling – everyone’s been so nice – and I would adore to be here again this time next year.”

It was a very special day for Robert Walker, of Alport, near Youlgreave, who has been a steward at Bakewell Show for 50 years.

Mr Walker, who has worn his father’s 100-year-old bowler hat at each show, said: “I’m so very proud to have beeen associated with this wonderful event for the past five decades.

“It’s got a very special place in my heart and long may it continue.”
