Threw bottle at window of ex’s grandparents

A Chapel-en-le-Frith man who smashed a window at the home of his ex-partner’s grandparents has been given a community order.

George Cooper was walking home from his current partner’s home in Chapel on April 21 when he threw a bottle of beer at the living room window of a house belonging to Beryl Bamford, grandmother of his ex-girlfriend Shannon Bamford.

The beer smashed the outer pane of glass of the window but the inner pane was undamaged, prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald told High Peak Magistrates’ Court.

Cooper, 20, admitted criminal damage.

John Bunting, defending, said: “He did know the house was Mrs Bamford’s there’s no argument about that.

“What he did say was that when he threw the bottle at the house he wasn’t thinking, it wasn’t an offence against Mrs Bamford.

“He is very shamed and remorseful.

“Although she is a vulnerable victim she was not deliberately targeted.”

Cooper, of Oak Close, was given a 12-month order with supervision and 80 hours’ unpaid work.

He must also attend an alcohol specific activity for six days and pay £85 costs, a £60 surcharge and £200 compensation to Mrs Bamford for the window.
