Tough choices for county

Derbyshire County Council will have tough decisions to make on services as it waits for the Government to decide how much cash it will receive.

The council has already confirmed it will not raise council tax, but council Leader Councillor Andrew Lewer, said: “The information we have at the moment does not provide the full picture and until we have studied the detail we cannot say how it affects our spending plans for 2013/14.

“We are not prepared to ask local people to pay more in council tax. Instead, we will make their money go further by continuing to find cheaper and better ways of delivering our services.

“It will mean tough decisions and changes to some services.”

So far, details of the county council’s indicative Council Tax Freeze Grant allocation for 2013/14 have been confirmed. This is £2.815m – higher than the council’s initial estimate of £2.450m due to the Government using different criteria to calculate the allocation.

Over the next five years Derbyshire County Council needs to reduce its spending by £125m and lose more than 2,000 jobs out of 36,000 staff members through voluntary redundancy and early retirement and vacancy control.
