Tourism adds vital boost to economy
Good news has brightened economic prospects in the Peak District and Derbyshire – where tourism generated a massive £1.7 million in 2011.
New research reveals that the industry’s contribution to the local economy rose by seven per cent on the 2010 figure to just over £1.6 million.
The number of people working in the tourism industry also rose from around 25,000 to just over 27,000 – which equates to an increase of eight per cent.
David James, Chief Executive of Visit Peak District & Derbyshire, the area’s official tourist board, said: “Naturally we’re delighted that the value of tourism to the Peak District and Derbyshire economy is continuing to grow year on year, and that there was such a marked rise in its performance from 2010 to 2011.
“It’s especially encouraging at a time when the economic recession is still biting deep and shows little sign of slowing – and we’re particularly pleased at the news that 2,000 jobs have been created in the sector in just one year.
“It underlines the fact that there’s never been a better time for business and other organisations to share in the current and future economic benefits that tourism is bringing to the area by becoming a member of the tourist board.”
The number of people visiting the area was also up on the 2010 with an increase of around eight per cent.
