Two Buxton firemen have been injured after their fire engine overturned in Chelmorton on Monday.

The crew of two, who had been deployed from Buxton Fire and Rescue Station, on Staden Lane, were en route to tackle a shop fire in Chesterfield when their aerial ladder platform (ALP) left the road at the A5270 Old Coalpit Lane at 12.07pm.

The driver sustained injuries to his right shoulder and his arm and was airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke.

The second firefighter injured his arm and was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport by the ambulance service.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that both men, aged 40 and 46, were hospitalised for precautionary checks and were returned home the same day with “superficial” injuries.

There were no other vehicles involved in the incident and no further casualties. The service said it was providing support to the individuals and families of all those involved in the accident and was commencing a thorough investigation.

Assistant chief fire officer Gavin Tomlinson said: “Our priority at the present time is to the firefighters involved in this incident and their families, who are all receiving our full support. A full investigation into the incident has commenced.”

Police closed the road between Brierlow Bar and Taddington from 12.45pm until 6.30pm.

Crews from Chesterfield and Staveley and an ALP from Kingsway Fire Station in Derby were mobilised to attend the original call out to the fire at the Save the Children charity shop in Chesterfield.
