Urgent health alerts issued as ‘dangerous’ heatwave begins to bake Derbyshire

Urgent health warnings have been issued ahead of an imminent heatwave in Derbyshire.

Temperatures across the county are now starting to rocket as hot and humid air from Spain moves north over the UK.

Tomorrow, the mercury is set to hit 28C in Chesterfield – making the town hotter than Barbados – and conditions will remain stifling over the weekend.

Nighttime temperatures will be well above average, weather forecasters said.

Public Health England has issued a heatwave alert lasting from tomorrow until Sunday which urges Derbyshire residents to be prepared for the sizzling conditions.

Steve Ramsdale, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Hot and very humid air coming up from Spain will see some particularly high day and night temperatures as we head into the weekend.

“The humidity will make it feel close, muggy and uncomfortable for many in the heat and people should take steps to keep cool.”

Dr Paul Cosford, of Public Health England, said: “While many of us enjoy hot weather, high temperatures can be dangerous, especially for those who may be particularly vulnerable such as older people, young children and those with serious illnesses.

“During the day, take care in the sun, don’t over-exert yourself in heat, drink lots of cool fluids and keep an eye out for friends and neighbours. Also, do what you can to minimise your risk of sunburn and try to keep sleeping areas cool.”

The rising heat and humidity is also likely to trigger stormy weather across Derbyshire over the weekend.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Areas of heavy, thundery showers may develop from Friday night and into Saturday.

“The development of these is uncertain but where they do form some torrential downpours are possible with frequent lightning, large hail and strong gusts. Significant flooding is possible.

“The public should be aware of the risk of disruption from any of these elements.”
