Vandals strike at town charity once again

Mindless vandals have once again struck at a charity which helps elderly and disabled people get out and about.

Three vehicles belonging to Buxton Volunteer Centre were targeted at the weekend – causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

The vehicles, which included a much-used minibus, had their wing mirrors smashed.

They were put out of use meaning the charity’s big-hearted volunteers had to use their own vehicles to take vulnerable people to community events.

The vehicles were damaged at the town’s Market Street car park.

Transport manager Howard Gunn said: “I’m absolutely disgusted that somebody would feel the need to do this to a charity.

“It’s achieved absolutely nothing and the community has suffered, plus we’re going to have to pay £600 out of our own funds for the repairs.

“It just beggars belief,” he added.

The charity was last targeted in January 2012 when vandals smashed the side door of its minibus – putting it out of action for two weeks.

Mr Gunn added: “This seems to be becoming a frequent problem.

“It may be a case of us asking the council to consider putting up CCTV and better lighting in the car park in a bid to deter offenders.”

Officers are investigating the vandalism, which happened sometime between 10.30pm on Friday and 2.30pm on Saturday.

A Derbyshire police spokesman said officers were carrying out enquiries and urged witnesses to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
