Wildlife–lovers have watched the birdies

The house sparrow is the most common bird in Dales gardens – according to a recent survey.

During the RSPB’s annual Make Your Nature Count survey an average of five sparrows appeared in gardens around Derbyshire.

They were closely followed in number by starlings, blackbirds. woodpigeons and blue tits.

Dr Daniel Hayhow, RSPB conservation scientist, said: “It’s really useful as a snapshot of how UK wildlife fared this summer and a number of species may have had tough time in the cold and wet weather.”
