Wirksworth braces itself for festival

The art world prepares to take Wirksworth by storm yet again for another successful festival.

Next week artists of all genres will flood the market town for the 19th annual Wirksworth Festival.

Between September 7 and 23, the festivities will feature the usual display of inspired and wonderful exhibition, as well as a few new sights.

On September 8 and 9, the people of Wirksworth will throw open their doors for the ever popular art and architecture trail.

There will also be a graduate showcase in the parish room, next to St Mary’s Church, in which young artists from universities in Derby, Nottingham, Staffordshire and Loughborough will be exhibiting their work.

The feminine voice will be the subject of a big sound project in the church itself, and in the vicarage gardens there will be an interactive ‘life boat’ installation.

There will be street performances from the St John’s Street Theatre, who will perform I Don’t Call That Art in Church Walk, as well as a performance of Shakespeare’s As You Like It in the Symonds House garden.

Natasha Astara, festival manager, said: “I really think the appeal of the festival lies in the fact that people can see contemporary art, which they would not usually see in a rural setting, particularly such an unusual one with interesting architecture – and everyone loves looking in people’s houses.

“The town just has a really good vibe fore the weekend. It’s just a really happy event.”

The fringe aspect of the festival, which was new last year, will continue.

As part of the fringe, writers Graham Sellors and Andy Miller will be presenting a showcase of their plays, prose and poetry called Double Take.
