Work on stones provokes anger
Work on the iconic stepping stones at Dovedale to make them higher has provoked anger from nature lovers.
Derbyshire County Council defended its decision to put slabs of limestone on top of the stones, saying they were hard to cross when the water levels rose - but locals claim the amendment has ruined the look of the area, with almost 900 people signing up to a protest group on social networking website Facebook.
Group founder Mark Taylor said: "I think the council sees the stones as merely a right of way, whilst regular and occasional visitors look at them as an iconic image of Dovedale. An image that, sadly, has been fundamentally changed for the worse."
County Cllr Chris Jackson said: "I've received many positive comments about the work, which was done to maintain a popular right of way.
"We did this to make it possible for the many visitors to Dovedale to cross a river that was often unpassable when a number of the stones were completely flooded."
