Youlgrave eco-waste scheme gets £20,000 boost
An award-winning sustainable energy group has been granted £20,000 towards its campaign to bring anaerobic digestion plants to the Peak District.
The Peak District National Park Authority gave the cash to Sustainable Youlgrave to help it assess whether the plants – which turn the gas from rotting waste into energy – could be built near the village.
Sustainable Youlgrave chairman John Youatt said: "It's very encouraging that the national park authority has confidence in our ambitious plans and are prepared to back community-led green ventures.
"Anaerobic digestion plants are common in rural Germany and elsewhere in Europe, but in Britain they're relatively scarce.
"We hope to prove renewable energy technology is not just feasible but appropriate in a national park setting," Mr Youatt added.
The eco-group will hire renewable technology specialists to help it launch a full feasibility study this spring.
The grant came from the national park's sustainable development fund.
