Party spirit goes on in Wirksworth
NMAM 4-6-12 BWJ 17 Wirksworth Carnival.
The weekends showers did little to dampen the spirits in Wirksworth as the town celebrated the annual carnival alongside the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The three-day-long event started with the Blessing of the Wells as the town centre transformed into life with a farmers market and numerous stalls and activities.
From noon onwards a community picnic took place to mark the Jubilee and Wirksworth’s very own Carnival Queen, Shannon Louise Temperton, was crowned.
Chairman of the Wirksworth Carnival Committee, Chris Booth, said: “It was a fantastic day and we had a very good turnout.
“The grand finale was the parachute jump by the Princess of Wales regiment which was absolutely brilliant.”

The theme for this year’s carnival parade was medieval and left Wood Street at noon on Monday.
And while the showers did little to dampen the spirits, they certainly did manage to dampen the stage for Sunday’s Rockfest event.
Chris said: “We had to cancel because the stage got so wet.
“We will be rescheduling the event soon for anybody who bought advanced tickets.”

The last night of the Rockfest event was a huge success, though.
While many sat home and watched the celebrations in London on television, many people in Wirksworth headed to see Queen tribute band QEII with Fascismile as main support.
Chris said: “They were fantastic and we had over 500 people down.”
After a hugely successful weekend organiser’s are already looking to next year.

With five volunteers leaving the Carnival Committee, Chris is keen to hear from anybody who fancies stepping up to the challenge.
Chris said: “It would be a crying shame to lose a carnival that’s been going for over 100 years.”
