Ashbourne take Shield and Lea hold leaders

THAT Ashbourne Town should have won the Manor Pharmacy Shield may not come as a huge surprise, second half goals from Tom Pugh and John Ford (two) overcoming Laburnum Saints at Causeway Lane on Friday, but there were was one semi-shock in the Matlock and District League.

Struggling AFC Lea Holloway followed a 4-0 demolition of Duke William by holding leaders Tibshelf 3-3 at the weekend.

A double from Sam Fairburn and one from Gary Wilkinson were countered by a Dave Whitford strike to make it 3-1 at half-time. But a Wilkinson own goal and an injury time equaliser from Shaun Bott turned the title race very much in Ashbourne’s favour.

Saints picked themselves up less than 24 hours after the final and beat Duke 3-0 on Saturday, with Matt Warren (two) and Richard Austin on target.

But Matlock Town Youth ran riot against Riddings Rovers, winning 10-1. Scott Martin (four), Max Marsden (two), Liam Parkin, Andy Brown, Stephen Wood and Michael Edwards scored Youth’s goals.

Youth had earlier beaten Darley Dale Lions 3-2 with Wood, Marsden and Edwards on target, while Liam Keeton and Aaron O’Neill replied for Lions, who suffered another high-scoring defeat against Shirland on Saturday.

Paul Godfrey (two) and Ashley Webster scored for Darley. Ian Hursthouse (two), Stephen Boot, Gareth Brown and Carl Rice did likewise for Shirland.
