Bakewell boys at the double

THE unstoppable Bakewell Mannierians under 12s march on after a brace of wins against two strong opponents.

On a windswept winter’s morning up at Lady Manners School, Bakewell’s under 12s – 11 men strong – came up against Glossop and Mansfield in a triangular tournament.

With the team bolstered by a couple of Glossop players, the team was set to task by their coaches but got off to a rocky start with Glossop nipping in an early try.

But the thundering Josh put that straight with a great crashing try that Glossop had no answer for.

This was swiftly followed by tries from Alex and George. Glossop came back in the second half with an early try but Ben and Joel closed the game out shortly afterwards with a try each to make the final score 25-10.

The forwards pretty much dominated this game and the pinnacle of their success was the penalty manoeuvre engineered by Josh that saw the forwards rumble up the pitch like a freight train. Unfortunately, the ball was lost in the contact (something to work on in training) but the idea was top drawer rugby.

The second game against Mansfield was quite different as the Mansfield pack was big and strong, and pretty much won most of the scrums.

Having said that, with the wind behind them and playing downhill, the Bakewell boys were three tries to one up at half-time with some great work from the backs, including a fantastic penalty kick from Alex from his 22, which saw Ed chase it like a gazelle and score a great try.

In the second half, Mansfield came back at Bakewell and, with a minute to go, the scores were even. Enter Alex stage right, and after some great defensive work from the forwards on their own tryline Josh, Joel, Lewis, George, Jordan put in a great effort, zipping on the outside for a try.

The final score was 25–20 with Eddy taking the man of the match plaudits.
