On a cold, frosty morning and in their first cup outing of the year, Bakewell saw off spirited Paviors last weekend.

Paviors started the fastest and won two scrums against the head as the ball cannoned off Bakewell’s props. Paviors turned up the pressure and the game was played mainly in Bakewell’s half for the first 15 minutes. Paviors scored a well-worked try in the left corner, and converted it with a splendid conversion.

Bakewell, sponsored by Carlton Technologies, realised it was game on and raised their level of play.

There then followed five minutes of sustained pressure on Paviors and some smart work in the backs which saw Frazer Hope sail through, only to be held up just short of the line.

There was quick ruck ball and Ol Crampton drove over to make it 7-5 to Paviors.

The game settled into an even match with neither team able to break the deadlock. Notable work from John Askam, and Guy Stuart kept Paviors at bay.

Tactical kicking from Dom Jackson and Jamie Henderson relieved Bakewell in some tight spots, while Will Adams and Chris Taylor kept Paviors on the back foot.

Paviors, however, were able to benefit from a short period of pressure and mistakes by Bakewell as they slotted over a penalty to edge 10-5 ahead.

Again Bakewell’s response was immediate. More smart work from Chris Barlow, Frazer Hope and Connor Longson saw Hope over the tryline to level.

Into the second half, Bakewell continued to keep Paviors pegged back. Aggressive tackling from Ol Lowe and Chen Windle, Marcus Garcia Perez, and George Smith kept the flanks secure.

Calum Read secured good ball and set up fine mauls, again driving Paviors back. From a scrum ten metres out, Chris Taylor went blind before swift hands and fine juggling saw Connor Longson over.

Three tries to one had knocked a fair amount of stuffing from Paviors. Their only sortie near the Blues line ended with a quite startling tackle from Chris Barlow as the Paviors winger was about to touch down. Chris Barlow then slotted a penalty over with five minutes to play. Men of the Match were Ol Crampton and Frazer Hope.
