THERE were mixed results for two Buxton Amateur Boxing Club fighters in the regional stages of the ABAE Schoolboy Championships.

Giann Magno and Josh Taylor made the trip to Derby’s Engineers Club for the East Midlands leg of the national knockout competition, which featured boxing talent from Derbyshire, Nottingham, Lincolnshire, Leicester and Rutland.

Desperate for a contest, Magno was presented with the unwanted news that he would be crowned East Midland champion without the need to glove-up, with no opponent entering his 54kg weight and age category. Magno now progresses through to the Midlands/East Midlands final.

Taylor, experiencing his first taste of championship boxing in his first competitive season, was drawn against Derbyshire opposition in South Normanton’s well-schooled Charlie Peterson.

Peterson entered the bout with additional experience on Taylor, as both boxers looked to attain the upper hand in the early exchanges.

Throughout the contest Peterson demonstrated his experience throwing leather as he moved forward and landed multiple scoring shots.

Taylor gamely battled his way through the contest, eventually loosing to a stronger opponent on the day.

The Buxton fighter goes on to box at a Coventry show next month and will benefit hugely from mixing with a higher class of boxer.
