Buxton to take on league strugglers

BUXTON Football Club will be aiming to get their play-off challenge back on track on Saturday when they welcome league strugglers Eastwood Town to the Silverlands.

Manager Martin McIntosh believed it was two points dropped for the Bucks as they had to settle for a draw away at Blyth Spartans on Saturday, following on from their heavy 3-0 defeat to FC United of Manchester the previous weekend.

Despite the results, Buxton sit in seventh place in the table and are perfectly placed for an assault on the Premier Division’s top-five as the business end of the season arrives.

McIntosh said: “I think it was definitely two points dropped at Blyth on Saturday, and it wasn’t just me saying that. I was disappointed, but the players were every bit as disappointed and angry as I was. That just shows how far we have come as a team.

“It was an opportunity missed, but when you look at Saturday’s results and the league table, it was probably a point gained.”

Buxton’s opponents at the Silverlands on Saturday, Eastwood Town, are currently nine points adrift at the foot of the Premier Division, and with just three league wins to their name. But McIntosh has warned his players against complacency.

“I think we have got to fancy our chances, but football is not won or lost on paper,” he said.

“Their stats this season are not good, but when you are bottom of the league you will eventually win games, so it’s important that we don’t give them an opportunity for that to change.”

He added: “We are in a very good position in terms of the league and all our players are physically fit. It’s make or break for us now.

“I believe three positions out of the top-five have already been taken, by FC United, North Ferriby and Hednesford, so that leaves two places remaining and six or seven other teams still in the running, including us.

“It’s now up to us to go on a run and get as many points on the board as we can.”
