RISING young sports stars from across the county have shared a bursary fund of £30,000.

Many of the selected athletes are competing for England or Great Britain and those that are not are part of recognised national development squads or part of club academy structures. All are tipped for further success in their sport.

Each will receive a bursary of up to £300 - raised through Derbyshire Sport’s business network ICON - to help them meet training costs such as travel, equipment, coaching fees or competition costs.

Cllr Carol Hart, Chair of Derbyshire Sport, said: “Derbyshire has a great wealth of sporting talent in a wide range of sports, and it is important that this talent is identified and supported. Those that have received a bursary have told us that the financial assistance really does help, and that the recognition the scheme gives is also a great confidence boost.”

Bursary recipients include: Alison Gartside (taekwondo), from Great Longstone; Edward Hamer (mountaineering), from Over Haddon; Sophie Hawkins (hockey), from Great Longstone; Marsie Henderson-Hirst (archery), from Flagg; Ellie Koyander (skiing), from Tideswell; Danielle Allsop (kick-boxing), from New Mills; George Bloor (golf), from Chapel-en-le-Frith; Judith Browne (ice hockey), from Glossop; Katie Byres (athletics), from Glossop; Hannah Davies (shooting); Eric Ham (judo), from Glossop; Joel Leighton (water polo), from Bamford; Robert Machon (skiing), from Bamford; James Machon (skiing), from Bamford; Dominic O’Connor (rugby union), from Glossop; Russell Smith (swimming), from New Mills; David Voorheis (shooting), from Buxton; Jaime-Leigh Whitaker (judo), from Glossop; Abbie Wood (swimming), from Buxton.
