Cordin powers to 25 victory
RICHARD Cordin followed his Winster success with victory in the Matlock Cycling Club 25-mile time trial at the weekend.
The trial, based on the Matlock to Bakewell course, attracted 16 riders.
While the early morning sun cast sharp shadows across the tarmac the club’s three in-form riders, Peter Colledge, Chris Green and Cordin, battled for supremacy in temperatures of -2C.
Colledge was ahead in the first half of the race, having caught Green at the ten-mile mark.
But Green subsequently punctured and took no further part.
Colledge had set himself a pre-race target of catching Steve Heading.
However, in doing so he had nothing left to put into the final miles.
With ten miles to the finish he was leading Cordin by seven seconds.
Cordin, in contrast, rode strongly in the second half of the race, and as each mile passed he steadily gained vital seconds to come home the winner in 58 minutes and 49 seconds.
Colledge finished second in 58.55.
Mark Shardlow had problems with his seat pin which vibrated loose on the poor road surface, but still managed to take third place.
Surprise result in fifth place was Dominic Wibberley, a star rider for Matlock in the nineties and who has only recently made a comeback to time trialling, who set a personal best time of 1.01.21.
Chris Green was not the only rider to have a flat tyre, Lee Shunburne had only completed two miles when he punctured at Picory Corner.
Patrick Gould and Patrick Smart were riding their first ever 25-mile time trials. Patrick Gould, having competed in last season’s Ironman Triathlon, recorded an excellent 1.03.57.
Patrick Smart was on schedule to finish in 1.20.00, but the 13-year-old ran out of steam at the Matlock turn, and came home in 1.24.27.
After six events Peter Colledge is heading the Matlock CC points series with 133.
Chris Green is in second place with 124 and Karl Proctor in third with 117 points.
