Cricket call for females

Wirksworth & Middleton Cricket Club is calling on women and girls in the Dales to play cricket this year.

Having had considerable success with its girls’ section in recent years, the club is establishing a team to enter a women’s league being formed by the Derbyshire Cricket Board for the coming season.

The club is seeking to attract new and returning players from the Dales, as well as women who perhaps already play in men’s teams in the area, to join the nucleus of keen teenaged girls who have been with the club from their Kwik Cricket days.

“This is the next step for us in developing a full women’s and girls’ section at the club,” said Neil Smedley, parent and coach at the club, and Derbyshire under 15s girls’ team manager.

“We know that a number of the women who played here as girls in the past are interested in returning to the game and this is also a great opportunity for others, who’ve considered playing but never got as far, to become involved.”

The last few years have seen tremendous progress at the club, both on and off the pitch, and with a strong youth and senior set-up already in place, firmly establishing the club at the centre of women’s and girls’ cricket in the Dales is one of the club’s key aims for the coming seasons.

Any women and teenaged girls interested in playing women’s cricket this year are invited to indoor practice/taster sessions on Sunday, February 26 and March 4 at 3pm at Wirksworth Leisure Centre. Equipment will be provided.

For younger players, the club is holding Kwik Cricket practice at the same venue on Sunday March 11, 18 and 25, at 3pm for both girls and boys.
