Fourths stave off onslaught

Matlock 4ths 1

Staveley 1sts 1

The fourth team took the game to Staveley and turned in a really impressive performance.

Attacks down the strong right side by Janice Bush and Donna Poplar had the Staveley defence on the back foot. Numerous penalty corners went unrewarded due to an outstanding performance by the Staveley keeper.

Staveley had their chances and were quick on the break.

The Matlock defence had to dig deep at times and, against the run of play, Staveley managed to score a good goal, struck hard from the edge of circle and, despite keeper Claire Mosley getting a touch to it, it went in.

The second half saw a determined Staveley attack the Matlock team, who just managed to stave off an onslaught with Barbara Davenport and newcomer Polly Leech outstanding in defence.

Just in time, head coach Jamie Fleet put in an appearance and constructive advice saw a rejuvenated Matlock side put together quick sharp passes, especially in midfield by Chloe Farmer and Nicky Camfield, and saw more and more penalty corners conceded by the Staveley defence.

Initially it was a mishit by Farmer at the short corner which fooled the keeper and saw Matlock draw level. This was a great game, evenly fought, and a well earned point for the home team.
