GB call-up for Chapel athletics star
Jack Andrew
CHAPEL-EN-LE-FRITH athlete Jack Andrew is to represent the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team at the International Indoor Match Combined Events meeting in Spain this weekend.
The 21-year-old Manchester University student, who competes for Sale Harriers, was named by UK Athletics in the 20-athlete team for the event at Valencia’s Velodrom Lluis Puig Sports Hall, the same venue used for the 2008 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
Andrew will compete alongside two other team-mates in the under-23 men’s category, going up against teams from Spain and France.
He heads into the competition on the back of winning gold and silver medals in an England athletics multi-event competition held recently at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
Thirty-six senior men took part in the heptathlon competition, which featured a 60-metre race, long jump, shot and high jump on the first day, followed by a 60-metre hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 metres.
Andrew finished the event fifth overall, collecting a silver medal in the under-23 group and gold as the best North of England competitor.
• Andrew wishes to thank Hope Cement Works for their continued sponsorship and Chapel-en-le-Frith Leisure Centre for the use of their facilities.
