Get ready for a bumper weekend of cup action

With the temperatures set to rise this week, football looks like being back on the agenda for Manor Pharmacy Matlock and District Football League teams on Saturday, February 18.

There’s Derbyshire Cup North semi-final action with two teams from the Matlock and District Football League vying to be crowned the best.

The quarter-final stage saw four of the league’s teams competing for glory. Hopflower, who take on Dronfield Town from the Hope Valley Football League, got to the semi-final with wins against Chesterfield Town, Darley Dale Lions and Shirland Miners Welfare.

This season, Hopflower are competing on all levels, currently lying fifth in Hellison Trophies Division One. Hopflower have only lost one game all season, scoring 20 goals in nine games and conceding only nine.

They are in the semi-final of the Cavendish Cup and are waiting to play a quarter-final match in the Manor Pharmacy Shield.

Woodthorpe Rovers, also of Division One, take on Tintwistle Athletic from the Lancashire & Cheshire Football League. Woodthorpe’s journey saw them start with a 7-1 victory over Stoney Middleton.

Up next was Wirksworth Albion, also from the Matlock League, who Woodthorpe beat 4-1. The quarter-final saw Woodthorpe take on Wirksworth Ivanhoe from the Midlands Regional Alliance and, after some great football, Woodthorpe booked their place in the semi-final with a well deserved 2-1 win.

Woodthorpe lie third in Division One only four points off the top of the league and have a great chance of winning the league this season.

This week’s action also sees the return of Manor Pharmacy Shield Quarter-Final action, featuring: Shirland Miners Welfare v Miners Arms, Laburnum Saints v All Inn and Darley Dale v Shirebrook Rangers.

The Matlock Cup Quarter-Final, which involve teams fron Division Two, also takes place this weekend. The games are: Tansley v Hurst Farm Utd, Codnor Miners Arms v Chesterfield Town Reserves, Black Hippo v AFC South Wingfield and AFC Lea Holloway v Riddings Rovers.

Solar Press Division Two action sees Matlock Sports play Wirksworth Albion.

n The Manor Pharmacy Matlock & District Football League is now looking for any new or unattached teams for the 2012/2013 season.

The league’s committee feels this season alone has proved that the Matlock & District Football league is fast becoming one of the best leagues in Derbyshire, not only because of its great footballing teams but also its great football pitches, superb young and old referees and a committee that prides itself on being fair and supportive.
