Landlord proves he can pick a winner

The latest winner of the innovative online football-based predictive game, JustOneStanding.com, has been announced after the second round of the competition.

Landlord Patrick Stevenson from Matlock has emerged victorious after an 11-week round, which started back in November, to claim the £2,500 prize fund from his £10 stake.

Having already established itself as an alternative to Fantasy Football, the idea of the game is to predict the winner of a football match of your choice from one of the chosen leagues – Barclays Premier League, npower Championship, npower League 1 or npower League 2 each week.

Win and you stay in, anything else and you are out.

Each person making a wrong prediction is eliminated until there is JustOneStanding, who will scoop the jackpot.

On this occasion, that was a delighted Pat, who explained that his success came as a pleasant surprise: “I didn’t realise I was down to the last few until I got the call to say I had won. I don’t claim to have a great knowledge of the game so I hope I can be an inspiration to others.

“I like to watch matches and I scan the paper to know what is going on but I am not up on the statistics. My approach was simply to look at the teams playing each other each week who were the furthest positions apart in the table.”

Pat is landlord of the Thorntree Inn in Matlock and it is proving to be something of a happy hunting ground for JustOneStanding.com contestants.

“A lot of my locals are regular players and it has been the good source of banter in the pub recently. There have been a few people who drink here who have had success with it so it is proving to be a something of a lucky pub.

“We have shared a few jokes along the way as people have been knocked out but I guess the last laugh is on me now as I know they will all be after me for a free pint now I have won!”

Should such a generous offer be bestowed to the locals, Pat has suggested he’ll do well to see any of the cash himself after all his hard work.

“I think we’ll be putting the money towards our holiday, at least that is what my girlfriend is planning! Seriously though, the money will certainly help; it’s a nice, unexpected bonus.

“I am really chuffed and can’t wait for the next competition and I will certainly be encouraging others to enter. It is a fun game and I think I have proved anyone can win it.”

JustOneStanding.com is a game that is as much about the community spirit and camaraderie as it is about the prize. It follows a format that, while testing the football knowledge of its members, also feeds back 30 per cent of all stakes into the clubs and groups nominated by those playing the game.

In addition, JustOneStanding.com backed the Sam Broatch Memorial Fund fixture, held at Matlock Town FC, between Matlock Town Vets and a team of past and present footballers representing Sam, the young Derbyshire man who died suddenly while on a working holiday in Australia.
