Lethargic Rowsley pipped to the post

On Your Doorstep: The coaches and players of Rowsley 86 FC, who are enjoying their thirtieth anniversary year.

Rowsley returned to MRA action following last week’s cup exploits away to Newhall United.

The visiting side began the game on the front foot and could have scored in the first minute had Tim Bakers pull back not been behind Will Fletcher.

Rowsley created a number of chances through Baker, Andy Roome, Will Fletcher and Sam Hoskin – who were all denied goals by either poor finishing or superb goalkeeping.

It was Newhall who opened the scoring on the break, though, with a low driven cross powerfully fired home by the lively forward.

The team continued to press forwards but chance after chance was squandered by a lethargic Rowsley.

However the visitors did equalise just before the break when Hoskins’ cross field pass found Nik Baker – who played in Roome before Tim Baker powerfully finished.

Throughout the second half Rowsley continued to press Newhall back but another break saw a left wing cross left by all Rowsley defenders and keeper to allow the on rushing midfielder to score.

Rowsley continued to search for an equaliser but Porter and Roome were both thwarted by the outstanding Newhall keeper.

The equaliser came with 70 minutes on the clock when Roomes’ powerful run saw him clipped in the box for a penalty in which Nik Baker slotted home to equalise for the second time.

The visitors relentlessly tried to press home but chance after chance let Newhall off the hook.

With ten minutes remaining Newhall retook the lead after a superb cross from the right winger allowed the left winger to come between two defenders and rifle his effort into the roof of the net.

The away side tried in vain for a third equaliser but could not manage the feat.

Rowsley will now have to dust themselves off for next week’s trip to Melbourne for a 2.30pm Kick-Off.
