Kettering 7, Matlock 30
In-FORM Matlock made it back-to-back wins in the league with the defeat of Kettering.
The win - plus one bonus point - sees Matlock in fifth spot in the Midlands Division One East table, just six points off the leaders Peterborough Lions.
Kettering’s clear lack of preparation was badly exposed in the first quarter as the visitors took full advantage to open up an 18-point lead, with tries coming from James Young and Jack Wagg. Chris Young added two penalties and one conversion.
The score could have been worse had the referee somehow not awarded a penalty try to Malock, when a blatant late tackle prevented a certain try.
After the first quarter the Blues came back into the game and dominated much of the next 40 minutes, but Matlock’s solid defence and poor decision making by the hosts prevented Kettering from closing the gap.
There was, however, a well worked try for Luca Rodger, which was converted by Joe Daniel.
Then, in the final 15 minutes, Matlock made sure the game was well and truly won with two further tries - one from Dan Hooton and a fine solo effort by the ever dangerous Henry Packard.
Coach Alan Johnson was satisfied with the win.
“It’s a very pleasing result for us. I don’t think we’ve ever won at Kettering before,” he said.
“They’ve had some good results recently, like us, and are another team on the up. The lads remained focued though and we went into a strong lead within the first 20 minutes.
“We were then guilty of taking our eye off the ball, which allowed them to get back into it and they were on top for a while.
“But a few strong words at half time made sure we came out and to be fair to the lads we dominated again. They didn’t really have a look in.”
Matlock face Spalding on Saturday at home (KO 2.15pm)
