McCann adds Masters title to trophy haul

DARLEY Dale's Jim McCann has won his second national billiards title of the season, winning the English Grand Masters Billiards Championship at the Atack Centre in Nuneaton.

In a hard fought final he saw off the challenge of his old rival Peter Shelley, of Stoke.

The result means that of the four major titles available McCann has won two – the UK Seniors and the Grand Masters – and has reached the final of the UK Open and the last 16 of the English.

With this season nearing its end, McCann stands at number four in the national ranking list, which is some achievement for someone who will be drawing his pension in a few months time.

l DARLEY Dale snooker star Nigel Bond enjoyed only a brief stay in the Far East for the Bank of Beijing 2009 China Open.

He suffered a first round 5-0 defeat at the hands of Allister Carter, the world number seven, on Tuesday.

Bond, ranked 23 in the official rankings, faces number nine Peter Ebdon in the first round of the World Snooker Championship at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre on Tuesday April 21.
