No trip across border for Derbyshire CCC

Derbyshire County Cricket Club has elected not to return to Leek in 2012 but has left the door open for future seasons.

The venue for the Friends Life t20 match against Durham Dynamos on Wednesday, June 20, has, therefore, been confirmed as the County Ground, Derby, with a 7pm start.

Leek’s Highfield ground in the Staffordshire Moorlands hosted a Clydesdale Bank 40 match versus Essex Eagles in 2010 and the Friends Life t20 visit of Warwickshire Bears the following year.

Derbyshire chief executive Keith Loring said: “The way the fixtures have fallen has not been conducive to a match at Leek in 2012, but it remains very much in our thinking.

“The two matches we have hosted at Highfield have been a success and I would like to thank everybody at Leek CC for their assistance and cooperation in staging the fixtures.

“But with only five Friends Life t20 matches in 2012 and four of our Clydesdale Bank 40 matches accounted for by TV coverage and the Chesterfield Festival, our hands have been very much tied for the forthcoming campaign.”

“The infrastructure that has been put in place, plus the successful match-day operations model and excellent links with Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, make it a very strong possibility that first team county cricket will return to Leek in future years.”
