Points galore in an entertaining game

Matlock under 12s v Sheffield, Jan 29 2012.

MATLOCK RFC under 12s just missed out at the weekend in an entertaining encounter as they lost 40-35 to Sheffield.

The scores kept mounting up on Sunday in a game featuring nearly 40 youngsters keen to show their mettle.

Was it playground stuff? Far from it as, apart from the score see-sawing, you wouldn’t see commitment like this outside of a rugby field.

Edged out by the odd try in 15, Matlock encountered arguably the first side this season who matched their fitness levels, with neither side dropping the pace from first whistle to last.

Sheffield came with a very organised backline and big, strong forwards who threatened to swamp the hosts.

The Matlock team rose to the challenge and crashing tackles were made all over the pitch by both teams, impressing all those watching the encounter.

A rampant Harvey Williams ran in five tries with Tom Osborn and Al Wilmot adding one each.

More opportunities were lost by a mix of good Sheffield defence and some sloppy Matlock passes.

The other player to dominate play was the Sheffield second row, towering over the referee, who forced his way over six – count them, six – times.

He could have scored more but for great tackles by Matlock players, in numbers usually, taking him down.

The word from the touchline was that it was one of the best Matlock performances this season.

The view from the pitch was that no effort was spared and the Sheffield coach was also very complimentary.

This was a game which gives promise for the future with lots of hard work ahead.

The coaches and supporters can’t ask for much more than that.
