Six Matlock CC riders tackle climb

Monsal Hill Climb was held on Sunday morning in glorious sunshine with huge crowds lining the closed road to cheer on the riders.

The climb is much shorter than most events, and is widely considered as a sprinters’ climb as it is just 675 yards with an average gradient of one in six.

A record field of 129 riders took to the start line, with many local pros taking part, including the Downing brothers from Rotherham.

Gunnar Gronlund, the current National Hill Climb Champion, was last man off, and all eyes were on him to see if he could hold his own against the pro riders.

It wasn’t to be though as Gronlund finished in third place overall in a time of 1 minute 24.8 seconds.

The event was won by Wheelbase rider Jack Pullar in a time of 1:18.9. Russell Downing came second, just two seconds back on 1:20.6.

Local Charge Bikes’ Chris Metcalfe – second in the event last year – had to settle for 11th place finishing in a time of 1:31.1.

There were a total six Matlock Cycling Club riders in the event, with five of them finishing within two seconds of each other. Kevin White just had the edge over Pete Colledge, Chris Green, Steve Strange and Mike Blair.

The times were split between 1:45 and 1:47. Wiliam Alves also rode, recording a time of 2:38.4.
