Super Sarah sees off the opposition

Peel Park in Bradford hosted round five of this year’s Cyclo-Cross National Trophy Series on Sunday with one Matlock Cycling Club youngster in particular turning in an eye-catching display.

Riders were greeted with a technical course made harder by the cold, wet and muddy conditions making it a real challenge of skill as well as strength and speed.

There was considerable success for local riders throughout the age groups.

Matlock Cycling Club’s Sarah Lomas put in a brilliant performance in the Under 16 Girls race. Lomas battled hard throughout the race with Ffion James of Abergavenny Road Club and Grace Garner of RST Race Team. The trio opened up a considerable gap on the chasing bunch, but Lomas was proving just too strong as the others struggled to keep pace.

Lomas finally managed to open up a gap and took a very impressive win, with James finishing in second place and Garner making up the final podium spot.

Lomas’s teammate Arthur Green put up a noble fight in the Under 16s Boys race but Jack Ravenscroft of Solihull CC and Dylan Kerfoot-Robson were just too strong on the day. Green, who has another year to run in the same age category, was a comfortable third.

In the Under 14s Boys race, Matlock new recruit William Gascoyne, still riding in the series for his former club Heanor Clarion, rode to an impressive second spot overall.

Boardman Elite rider Annie Last from Great Longstone proved too strong for the rest of the senior women riders as she outsprinted Louise Robinson of Stourbridge CC to take yet another win.

Jim Bryan of local race team Zepnat won the Veteran 40+ race to increase his overall lead in the Series.
