Double Delight: Lady Manners School pupil Tasmin Boam, 14, celebrates winning the Derbyshire County Cross Country Championships and the Derbyshire Schools Cross Country Championships.

YOUNG cross-country ace Tasmin Boam completed an impressive achievement when she became the double county cross country champion in freezing conditions at St. Mary’s Mount College, in Spinkhill, on Saturday.

The 14-year-old, from Hackney, convincingly took the Derbyshire Schools title, to add to the county championship she won last month at Markeaton Park.

The slippery surface, combined with the testing terrain, made for a serious challenge, even for the experienced athletes in the field.

Tasmin, who is a Year Ten pupil at Lady Manners School in Bakewell, was a year younger than many of her rivals, but nevertheless, she started confidently, sitting a couple of metres behind the early leaders.

With 1,600 metres to go, she moved to the front and began to pull away, accompanied along the way by her Chesterfield Athletics Club teammate Lindsey Morgan.

Lindsey eventually dropped back as Tasmin relentlessly attacked every incline, extending her lead all the way to the line.

Valeska Wills of Derby, a prolific county champion, finished strongly to take the silver medal, followed closely by Lauren Becket in bronze position.

The Derbyshire team heads to the National Schools Championship in Somerset next month but first up for Tasmin is the National Cross-Country Championships.

This will be held in London in two weeks’ time, where Tasmin will be aiming to test her cross country skills against the best from across the country.
