Thirds join county elite
MATLOCK Baileans thirds concluded a fantastic season as Derbyshire League runners-up after a 2-1 victory over Ashbourne seconds.
Matlock dominated from the start, but Ashbourne sneaked in a scrappy goal and put Matlock on the back foot for a while until Captain Jane Proctor nicked in an equally untidy score at the other end.
With the scores level, Matlock set about the second half with new vigour.
The young legs of Katharine Lander, Julia and Katy Price, Nat Pearce and man-of-the-match Laura Hudson left Ashbourne watching.
Again and again Matlock attacked and even the defence got involved, with sweeper Jenny Kennedy-Murphy surging through from the back along with Cath Croney, Grace Day, Emily Warren and Sarah Kingston.
Keeper Ali Millyard got the odd touch throughout the game, but nothing to trouble her.
As Ashbourne packed the circle, and Matlock had a string of penalty corners, it looked like Matlock would never score, but it was Proctor who slammed the ball in from close range to seal a brilliant season for the thirds.
l BAILEANS players and coaches had a big hand in Derbyshire U17s’ national finals success at the weekend.
They beat Buckinghamshire 2-1, Suffolk 4-3 and Dorset 2-0 and also drew with West Yorkshire 1-1 to gain ten points, which was enough to secure them the title again.
It was a brilliant team performance with every player giving 100 per cent over the whole weekend, even in the second half of the very last game when tiring faces could be seen as the sun burnt everyone else to a crisp.
Baileans fifth team captain Helen Greer, first team skipper Nic Martin and fellow club coach Katy Honeyman led the county squad, which included Baileans players in the shape of goalkeper Gina Camfield, Deb Greer, Ash Butterworth, Alice Cundy, Laura Boddy and Chloe Knebel.
l MATLOCK U11 boys and girls played their final games of the season last weekend against teams from Ashbourne and Belper.
Matlock girls’ first game against the Matlock boys was the ultimate in sibling rivalry, with the girls desperate to show their brothers that they could beat them, which they did courtesy of individual goals from Beth Harwood and Rebecca Knowles.
The boys fared better against Belper boys.
They conceded two goals, while the girls were 3-0 down at half time despite some great saves from goalie Lottie Fraser.
Following the team talk at half time the girls didn't stand off and let the boys keep firing shots at them, but they got the tackles in and marked the boys much more effectively.
Midfielders Julie Smith-Vidal and Jess Liddle worked really hard, and Jenny Brown got in some crucial tackles, limiting the final score to 4-0 to Belper.
The girls final game against Ashbourne was their best result of the day, with forwards Beth Harwood and Rebecca Knowles showing great individual skills.
Matlock scored their first goal from a penalty corner, Beth following up a shot and taking on several defenders before putting the ball past the keeper.
Matlock won two further penalty corners, scoring from both, with Beth claiming her second and Jess Liddle making it three for Matlock.
The fourth goal came right out from Matlock’s defence when a ball from Frankie Monteith was driven down the right flank by Jess, who crossed to Rebecca to beat several Ashbourne players before slipping the ball across the circle for Beth to put in the back of the net.
A similar move resulted in a fifth goal for Matlock, the work this time being done by Julia Smith-Vidal, taking on Ashbourne's midfield she fed the ball through and the Beth/Becc partnership did the business with Rebecca scoring this one.
The final goal saw the duo at work again and Beth adding another goal to her very successful morning.
