Matlock Baileans 2nds took on West Bridgford Monarchs’ first team in their first league game of 2012 after some promising displays in friendlies played since Christmas.

Matlock went into the game knowing how important it would be to take advantage of the home fixture and take maximum points.

Early on in the proceedings, Sarah Joyce was tackled in the ‘D’, seeing a penalty corner awarded.

Holly Smedley stopped the push out well for Rachel Moor to slip it left to Jill Beacham. Seeing Rachel in a great position, and unmarked, Jill slipped the ball back to Rachel who swept it nicely past the goalkeeper, earning Matlock the lead.

A mistake in the Matlock midfield resulted in a respectable solo effort by a West Bridgford player paying off for the equaliser.

Matlock battled on. Mistimed tackling from the West Bridgford team earned Matlock further penalty corners.

A good routine and clean strike by captain Claire Stevenson gained Matlock the lead again.

West Bridgford broke early in the second half. A free hit taken just outside of the 25-yard line went straight into the ‘D’ and a West Bridgford striker got a deflection, sending the ball flying into the top of the net.

But Matlock were certainly not going to take it lying down. A physical game continued, again another penalty corner being awarded to Matlock following frustrating tackles by West Bridgford.

Matlock took the chance well, skilfully moving the ball around in the ‘D’ before the chance was finally converted by Ruth Whittaker from a great position on the left post.

Matlock were pleased with the 3-2 win, although aware that improvements need to be made for forthcoming fixtures.

Becky Tang and Sarah Joyce were jointly chosen as Matlock’s ‘Man of the Match’.
