AN extremely successful Captain's Weekend at Matlock Golf Club culminated last Sunday in club captain Roger Hardy presenting his Captain's Prize to Chris Beakey, whose 42 points included an amazing run that saw him score 27 on the back nine.
Baden Edgson also scored 42 points to scoop Division One from Richard Hayes and Stuart Packer, while Ian Waite won Division Two ahead of Brian Walker and Max Sharpe.
Charlie Hodgkinson won Division Three on a countback from Peter Wainwright, with Peter Townsend in third place.
Terry Moorhouse was the victor in Division Four ahead of Tom Hadfield and Nigel Hughes. Dennis Freeberne and Ken Smith won the veteran's competitions, with Alan Holmes taking the seniors’ prize, while John Simmons and Ian Thurlby were best committee member and past captain respectively.
Saturday had seen an early 6am shotgun start to a 'Texas Scramble' when the team of John Telford, Derek Smith, John Chapman and Gareth Taylor ran out winners from Martin Coupe, Mark Midgely, Dave Revill and Chris Sparrow.
Other highlights of the morning were Chris Roome recording a hole in one and, of course, the ensuing breakfast.
In other competitions over the weekend , Brian Allen won the President’s Trophy and Diane Gray won the ladies competition, while James Morrell won Division One of the juniors event from Jamie Fairclough, with Tom Hill and George Brown topping Division Two.
l Bakewell Golf Club president Dr George Pennington played host to 52 golfers playing in teams of four for his annual President’s Day.
Although it was the day of the summer solstice the weather was far from summery with rain falling increasingly heavily throughout the day.
But golfers are prepared for all weathers and so this did not dampen the spirits of the participants.
The overall winners, on a countback, were the past and present captains’ team of Frank Parker, David Hutchinson, David Brock and Keith Potter with an impressive total of 86 points.
Apart from generous prizes this team also won the prestigious President’s Trophy, a 19th century hickory shafted ‘baffie’ first presented in 1984 by then-president Jack Warner.
Second were Peter Garret, Steve Rowland, Richard Bacon and M. Green, whose 86 points lost only on a countback.
The best men’s pairing was J. Kidder and D. Green, the best ladies was Mrs Val Straw and Mrs Beryl Miller, and the best mixed pair was John and Sue Youdan.
Sue Youdan’s 19 inches easily won the ladies’ nearest the pin prize, with Bill Hudson, for the men, achieving only 21 feet and ten inches.
All competitors were treated by the president to a splendid buffet supper prepared by club steward Justine Galley and club chef and husband Tim.
