PETER Colledge saw off the challenge of two visiting riders returning with hopes of more open glory in the Dales.
In Matlock Cycling Club’s open 25 mile time trial on Sunday, both Dominic Sweeney, of Lutterworth Cycle Centre, and Andy Proffitt, of Arctic Premier RT, were set to try their luck again, Sweeney having won the club’s Open 10 in May, with Proffitt claiming the 50 in June.

However, Sweeney did not start, which left Proffitt as the clear favourite, with Richard Cordin and Colledge the local challengers.

On a blustery morning the unpredictable wind made conditions difficult.

But Colledge put in an exceptional performance to beat Proffitt by 27 seconds and post the only sub 55-minute ride, beating his own course record by a huge two minutes and 31 seconds to set a new standard of 54.53.

In third place was Cordin, who recorded 56.21 to beat his previous best by one minute and 11 seconds.

First and only lady home was Lynn Hamel of www.thegreenroomgroup.com who finished 14th in 1.01.49, which was also a new course record.

Matlock also secured the team prize courtesy of messrs Colledge, Cordin and Chris Sharp, who finished 15th in 1.01.50.

Colledge’s victory made up for his defeat by Belper rider Dave Wallwin in a thrilling Club 10 just five days earlier.

With a tailwind out to Bakewell, the 27 riders powered into the breeze on the return, with Wallwin’s 22.25 just edging it by a single second from Colledge.

In fact, just eight seconds separated the first four riders.

Cordin was only two further seconds behind in third place, with another Belper rider, Jonathan Marshall, fourth in 22.33.

The next wave of riders were only separated by a mere three seconds, with Matt Ingram recording a season’s best time of 23.39, and Steve Strange and Derby Mercury’s Mark Shardlow only three seconds back in joint sixth place, Strange recording a personal best.

A familiar name did claim the Long Hilly Championship, however.

Chris Green had a more comfortable 20 second margin of victory in horrendous weather conditions, completing the 10.4 mile course in 28.15.

With both Cordin and Colledge absent, Chris Metcalfe took on the mantle of Green’s closest rival and set a new PB of 28.35 in the process.

Leigh Fearn secured third place, recording 29.22, with Karl Proctor fourth at 29.26, also a new personal best.

There was PB too for sixth-placed Chris Sharp with 30.08.
