MARK Shardlow and Andy Woolf pushed favourite Peter Colledge all the way in last week's Matlock Cycling Club Ashford 5 time trial.
Shardlow rode a personal best time of 11 minutes and ten seconds to finish equal second with Woolf, who had clawed back several seconds on Colledge with an impressive home leg ride.

But Colledge hung on to his lead, winning the event in 11.04, as
Shardlow and Woolf consigned Chris Green, a further eight seconds back, to a rare finish outside the top three.

Karl Proctor chose to ride his road bike and his finishing time was well down on the previous week.

Matlock CC’s younger riders also found the stiff breeze hard to cope with.

Arthur Green, 12, was the fastest in 14.29, while Patrick Smart just beat 20 mph with 14.58 and fellow 13-year-old Will Colledge recorded 15.27.

IN the short hilly trial, the damp weather caused most riders to leave their time trial bikes at home and ride their road bikes.

But riding his time trial bike paid off for Richard Cordin who won by a clear margin in 19.46.

Hill climbing specialist Chris Metcalfe had missed all the early time trials due to work commitments, but he showed he had lost none of his form from last season to take second place in 20.09.

Leigh Fearn came home in third place in 20.41.

For Teresa Billington it was her first ever time trial and she battled round this tough and demanding course in 27.12.

Patrick Smart gave his all to cut a further 57 seconds off the personal best he only set last week and he finished in 24.52, tenth out of 16 riders.
