A FULL entry of 200 competitors took part in the Matlock Open on Sunday and on a glorious June day the quality of the golf matched the weather.
First prize and The Smedley Memorial Visitors Cup went to the Chesterfield pair of Neil Miller and John Saphill with a nett 62, winning the trophy on a countback from Martin Twigg and Mark Whithorn.
David Hill of Matlock and Gary Edwards of Workso
p were edged into third spot with the same score.
Shaun and Les Bacon shot 63 to take fourth with Ian Marr and John Beardsley (64) close behind.
Andrew Hession and Graham Coppen won the best gross score with 64.
In the mixed section J Smalley and Mrs Boneham of Notts Golf Club were the victors with a nett 66, ahead of Ray Twigg and Mrs S Head, while the ladies’ prize went to Pauline Bramley and Wendy Coussens, who also recorded a 66.
Matlock members dominated the prizes when Matlock Golf Cub held their Seniors Open No. 1 last Wednesday, with only one visitor featuring in the top six pairs.
Andy Norton and Steve Birds claimed first place with a massive 47 points.
Jeff Palmer and Bob Whyld, with 44 points, pipped Bob Vine and Les Mooney for second on a countback, while Ian Waite and Richard Hayes took fourth with the same score.
Matlock's John Beeston and Charles Voevkins, of Tapton, were the best of the pairs with 43 points, ahead of Barry Dring and Sammy Jones.
The Chesterfield pair of Jack Wheeldon and Lynn Thomas took seventh, with Derek Cooper and Roger Thornley of Stanedge completing the prize winners.
