SUMMER seems to be in the air at Carsington.
The water is warming up and gentle winds are blowing in, mainly from the west.
There are plenty of lake olives hatching and a few damsels, there have even been some mayfly, while the sedges are starting to come of an evening.
The first of the p
in fry have been seen and discovered in the stomach contents of a few fish as well.
The fish have started to spread out from the margins and slow, relaxed fishing is really the key at the moment, with buzzers and nymphs accounting for most of the fish.
Fish the buzzers on as long a leader as you can manage, the longer the better, and just leave them absolutely static or just the slowest of figure eights just to keep in touch with them.
Nymphs have worked best fished on an intermediate or a sink tip line, and again just a slow figure of eight for the retrieve.
Best rainbow for the last two weeks goes to Mr P Hind, who landed a superb 5lb 1oz trout with a green buzzer fished static under a bung in Sheepwash Bay.
Ross Dyer-Smith caught a stunning 5lb grown-on brown from Brown Ale Bay.
This cracking fish fell to a gold head hare’s ear, fished on a floating line and just left to drift round on the breeze.
There have also been several good rudd (to 2lb 8oz) on the returns as well as one perch.
Top spots for the week were Tower Bank, Sheepwash, Oldfields Lane and Shinningford Creek from the boats, and Millfields Point and Upperfields Bay from the bank.
The best flies were black or green buzzers, diawl bachs, hare’s ear, PTN, damsel nymphs, cormorants and black and peacock spider.
Fishing at Foremark has slowed up this week with a brown algal bloom putting the fish right off.
A rod average of 1.8 for the week showed how some anglers really struggled and couldn't tempt anything, whereas other anglers put plenty of fish in the net.
However, Kev Hart had a fine 6lb rainbow which took a black diawl bach off the top.
Bank anglers are having to fish off the points or the jetties to get that bit more distance.
Anglers using nymphs on a long leader or boobies on the bottom have been catching the better bags.
Ladybower continues to fish well, especially around Snake Meadow, Ladybower Bay, Old FIshery Office and parts of the dam wall.
The fishery has produced an 8lb rainbow in recent weeks and the prospects for coming weeks are said to be quite good.
With the carp spawning at Press Manor, the carp lake is off limits until June 27.
However, an 18lb carp was pulled out of the coarse lake by an angler fishing on the floating reed beds.
Pellets, especially the 1mm or 1.5mm variety on a hook, are proving very successful, particularly on a pole or a whip.
The trout lake is proving more of a challenge however, although Chesterfield angler Dave Shipley and Wingerworth’s Tony Hampson have had joy with dries.
