MATLOCK Rugby Club could be in line for a £5,000 prize after winning the first Heineken tens tournament at Cromford Meadows on Saturday.
Fourteen teams from across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, as well as sides from Durham and the University of Manchester, took part in the ten-a-side competition, which appropriately coincided with Matlock’s annual beer festival.

The hosts’ A side recovered from a shaky start to eventually claim a home win in the cup final over Durham Old Boys.

In the Plate competition, Nottingham side Mellish triumphed over Ashbourne in the final.

Matlock’s success means that as well as scooping around £500 from Heineken for hosting the event, Matlock go into the hat to win a £5,000 ‘makeover’ of the club’s facilities.

They will be up against other winning clubs taking part in the Heineken tens series throughout the forthcoming season.

As well as the victory, there was a welcome return to action for young centre Dan Hooton, who dislocated and broke his ankle early last season.

And there was more good news for the club as Heineken were impressed enough with the organisation of the event to indicate that Matlock could host the tournament again in future.

Matlock club chairman George Edwards said: “I think the event went superbly well, everybody seemed to be pleased with it and the teams enjoyed it.

“Matt Hughes (second team captain) did a superb job of organising and co-ordinating the day.”
