Two events this week highlight the fact that water polo development continues to flourish in the area, despite the first team's lack of success so far this year.
North East Derbyshire Sports Development member Dan Turner gave a highly enthusiastic and informed third junior polo training session at the Lido on Monday in front of a group of very keen boys and girls.

Dan, who travels straight from Eckington to take the sessions, said: "We want as many as possible to take part and enjoy the game."

Lido manager Paul East who oversaw proceedings added: "In time and for those who are able enough and want to, an eventual move over to train with the seniors as a feeder type of arrangement is hoped for. In any case, enjoyment, an introduction to the game and fun and confidence in the water are the main objectives."

Thirteen youngsters attended between the ages of eight and 14 and more numbers are hoped for in the following weeks.

All are welcome at the Lido between 7pm and 8pm on Monday nights.

Friday sees the start of the sixth East Midlands open water polo tournament, now hosted at Nottingham's National Water Sports Centre.

Chief organiser Jim Evans, who has also played a huge part in the introduction of the Lido's junior sessions as mentioned above, is continuing to work tirelessly towards getting things right for the weekend.

"People travel from all over the country and once again we have some coming from abroad,” said Jim.

“They are great events and all are welcome to attend."

Matlock club members co-host the event along with the other Derbyshire clubs, South Derbyshire and Ilkeston.

Hopefully, more pleasant weather than last year will complement this year's event.
