AFTER almost a decade in the footballing wilderness, Winster once again has a Football Association-affiliated club raring to begin a competitive season.
Confirmation of the club’s affiliation arrived from the Derbyshire FA last week, almost a year since neighbours Andy Harby and Simon Percival decided to revive the team.
“It all started by talking to Simon one day,” Andy, 39, said.
“I asked him
if he fancied having a kickabout once in a while against different teams, and it kind of progressed from there.”
Recruiting squad members did not prove too much of a challenge.
There was an enthusiastic response to a call for people to sign up and now the club has a “a good nucleus of players” aged between 18 and 53, and a management team of three – Andy, Simon and Ian Simpson.
A season of friendly matches ensued and the club is now getting ready to take its place in Division Nine of the Chesterfield Sunday League, sporting a new kit paid for by Andy’s boss John Goodwin, owner of Buxton and High Peak Security.
And it was in Buxton that the team played its latest friendly, defeating Health and Safety Laboratories side Riddor United 4-2.
While near neighbours Elton are cruising up the league’s divisions, having secured promotion yet again at the end of last season, and Darley Dale United and Laburnum FC are in divisions four and three respectively, the chances of a local derby are slim for the forseeable future.
Besides, said Andy, the first season will be about “seeing how we go on.”
“We’re not planning on winning promotion,” he said. “We just want to consolidate ourselves.”
